What is Naloxone?

Naloxone (Narcan®) is a safe and legal drug that can reverse overdoses from heroin and prescription opioids. Naloxone is a medication that has the opposite effect of opioids in the brain and can be used to revive someone who has overdosed on opioids like heroin, oxycodone, or hydrocodone. In the past, Naloxone was mainly been used in the hospital setting or by emergency medical personal. However, naloxone kits are now available for anyone to use for emergency treatment of overdoses at home.

A naloxone kit typically contains 2 doses of naloxone, directions for use, and either a needle or a nasal spray. In Utah, our laws allow friends and family of people at risk for an opioid overdose to get a naloxone kit without a prescription. Patients and family members can request naloxone kits from any provider, such as a doctor, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, or pharmacist.
